Fannie Bay Gaol

Fannie Bay Gaol in Darwin, 1882-1979, is now empty and still.

It is hot dry and dusty. An occasional warm tropical breeze hints at its location near the sea.

The gaol has been ‘home’ to men women and children.

You can walk through the empty women’s garden, the airless cell blocks, complete with TV, the open mesh cells, the infirmary with the gallows included and the kitchens with the fly wire broken and gathering dust..

It is eerily quiet with its own ghosts and memories left to haunt the earth on which it rests.
